Of course, you can buy an umbrella anywhere, even in those dreaded “big box” stores. But will you get the quality and selection of a Midtown Umbrella? I highly doubt it.

The first “umbrella” decision you have to make is size. How big of an umbrella would you like? “The Swilt” in the fiberglass series comes in 8, 9, or 10 feet going slightly up in price as the size climbs.

A base that’s an ace!!!
You might already own furniture that comes with a pre-made hole that you will sink your new tilt umbrella in. That could work well as the pole fits most standard 1.5-inch diameter bases and holes.
No flimsy, cheap base will do. You want a sturdy and durable base that won’t topple over when that first gust of wind comes rolling in.
Midtown Umbrellas has an ace in the hole with a base that will not disappoint. At 55 pounds, it’s hefty.
Stability is what is required. This very wide square or round base will stay put keeping your umbrella well-anchored. No one wants their umbrella to fall on top of them due to a lightweight base.
In truth, the base looks a lot smaller in the online photos than in person measuring a humongous 19 x 19 inches according to my measurements.
It is also made out of powder-coated steel. In my experience, powder-coated steel withstands the elements better than other materials. So bring on the rain and sun. It will be totally fine!
Just as thrilling….it’s an attractive base, too. You can order a round or square base but I went with the square because it reflects my style more. But order what works for you and your dwelling!

Fabulous fabrics with Midtown Umbrellas!
Before you can choose a color, you have to decide whether you want the umbrella fabric to be of Terylast or Sunbrella.
While they both provide an amazing 98% UV protection and use the same solution-dyed method allowing for durability, Sunbrella is the premium fabric and does cost more.
I went with the Terylast fabric because I liked the 10-year limited warranty that protects one’s investment against fading, mold, or deterioration.
Terylast fabric is made from a very high-end solution-dyed polyester fabric. This fabric is designed to withstand the harshest weather conditions, therefore lasting an exceptionally long time.
Terylast also is silky to the touch and dries fairly quickly. While Sunbrella has earned its top-notch reputation, I found the Terylast to be an excellent choice as well.
Either way, you can’t go wrong. Both Terylast and Sunbrella are high-quality fabrics made to last a very long time. To the touch, they are also a much thicker fabric than you will get from no-name fabrics.

Color your world with Midtown Umbrellas
Terylast and Sunbrella come in different shades and that’s important to note when selecting your final umbrella.
It’s possible that you “set your heart” on a shade in one line or the other and so will have to go with that fabric line to get your first choice.
There’s plenty of room to dream with a rainbow of hues to select from. With the Terylast line, I was flip-flopping between midnight, aqua, tangerine, and sunflower. No easy choice here as all are so vibrant.
I finally settled on the sunflower and love the color. Although it’s more muted than the online photos reflect, it is the exact same shade as the sunflowers I grow in my front yard. Quite inspiring!
Besides, I find when I take my umbrella out of the stand and use it with my chairs, it looks ravishing against my red and blue chairs. This exciting yellow brings out the bold color of the chairs for a tropical vibe.
Terylast has 24 choices to select from and don’t underestimate the power of a striped umbrella either. You will get raving compliments on that zebra one, I promise!
There are fewer choices with the Sunbrella line with 19 colors to drool over. My personal favorite is Aruba followed by the macaw and forest green.
Whether you go the Terylast or Sunbrella route, you have to determine what kind of space you are creating.
Beachy? Traditional? Fun? Coastal? Woodsy? Or just a neutral space? It’s up to your personality!

Our back patio is located in full sun with zero overhead protection. This is problematic for three reasons: 1.) the harsh UV rays 2.) the scorching sun 3.) rain and sleet.

Babies in particular dislike the sun. I should know with a 9-month-old baby. Besides, sunscreen isn’t great for our skin. Most are loaded with toxic chemicals. Better to avoid the sun than apply sunscreen.
Asides from sun protection, a quality umbrella also keeps the rain away. Countless times I’ve sent my husband outside on to grill on our patio…..in the rain.
This does not make me popular! Now he does have a small hand umbrella to protect him from the rain. But because he’s holding the hand umbrella he only has one arm to grill. Not ideal.
When it is sunny, he’s not stuck over a hot grill in the blazing sun. Talk about a miserable man!

There are air vents at the top of the umbrella which I assume are to increase air flow ~ and it’s the exact same with my Monstera Plant! There are holes in the leaves so they can survive tropical gusts!

I’m saving the best for last here folks. The “swilt mechanism of the tilt allows you to rotate this umbrella and the opening/closing function.
When I want to open my umbrella, I simply turn that zinc alloy crank handle clockwise until it is fully opened. To swivel my umbrella, I push the bottom handle on the crank and rotate it to 360 degrees until it’s at the exact angle I wish it to be.
If wind is expected and I want to bunch the umbrella up, I simply crank it counter-clockwise. Presto. Done. The velcro strap keeps the umbrella closed tight.
