The Syracuse Mets won easily on Sunday while the rest of the Mets affiliates lost in discouraging fashion: Binghamton got shut out, Brooklyn blew a three-run lead in the ninth, and St. Lucie suffered an ugly blowout. A lot of the Mets’ household-name prospects were quiet on Sunday, but there were some great performances from some of the more under-the-radar players.

Christopher Suero had the best day of any Mets minor leaguer, knocking two home runs and four RBIs for Brooklyn. He’s been on fire lately and now possesses an .821 OPS for Brooklyn after being promoted from St. Lucie last month.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (38-24) 7, St. Paul Saints (27-35) 4

BOX SCORE

  • 1B Mike Brosseau: 2-for-5, R, K (.908 OPS)
  • 3B Rylan Bannon: 3-for-5, 2B (10), R, K (.885 OPS)
  • DH Luke Ritter: 2-for-5, 2 2B (13), R, RBI (43), K (.877 OPS)
  • RF Yolmer Sánchez: 1-for-3, HR (4), R, 3 RBI (19) (.608 OPS)
  • C Hayden Senger: 2-for-4, HR (2), R, RBI (14) (.719 OPS)

The Syracuse Mets defeated the St. Paul Saints 7-4 on Sunday. They were powered by a three-run blast from Yolmer Sánchez in the fourth inning, which put the Mets from down 3-2 to up 5-3. They remained in front for the rest of the game and pulled off a relatively easy win. Seven Syracuse batters had hits, with five recording multi-hit games.

  • LHP Tyler Jay: 2 IP, ER, 2 H, 0 BB, K (2.17 ERA)
  • RHP Jon Duplantier (W, 3-1): 2 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 2 K (5.31 ERA)
  • LHP Josh Walker (H, 1): 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, BB, 2 K (2.12 ERA)
  • RHP Yacksel Ríos: 1 IP, ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 3 K (3.24 ERA)
  • RHP Eric Orze (H, 5): 2 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, K (3.82 ERA)
  • RHP Ty Adco*ck (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 K (4.91 ERA)

Sunday was a bullpen game for the Mets with six relievers making appearances, none longer than two innings. Despite this, it was a solid game from the staff. Jon Duplantier got the win despite having the shakiest outing while Tyler Jay, Josh Walker, Eric Orze, and Ty Adco*ck all had scoreless appearances.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (28-27) 0, Bowie Baysox (29-27) 3

BOX SCORE

  • CF Alex Ramírez: 0-for-2, 2 BB, K, SB (21) (.646 OPS)
  • RF Ryan Clifford: 1-for-4, K (.767 OPS)
  • 1B JT Schwartz: 0-for-2, 2 BB (.755 OPS)

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies were silenced by the Bowie Baysox on Sunday, falling by a score of 3-0. Binghamton only recorded three hits all game, all of which were singles. The offense was able to draw seven walks, but none were able to be knocked in. The team was 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and they left 10 runners on.

  • RHP Nolan McLean (L, 0-3): 2 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 6 K (5.94 ERA)
  • RHP Junior Santos: 1 1/3 IP, ER, H, 0 BB, 0 K (4.35 ERA)
  • LHP Daniel Juarez: 1 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K (3.57 ERA)
  • RHP Carlos Guzman: 2 2/3 IP, 0 ER, H, 2 BB, 2 K (7.02 ERA)

Despite the loss, the pitching staff fared pretty well against the Baysox, allowing just three runs. Starter Nolan McLean allowed two of them in 2 2/3 innings of work. On the plus side, he did record six strikeouts, but he has not yet had the same success in Binghamton that he had in Brooklyn.

Junior Santos and Daniel Juarez combined to allow a run in 2 2/3 innings of work, but the best outing of the day came from Carlos Guzman who has had a brutal season in Binghamton so far. His 2 2/3 scoreless innings lowered his season ERA a full run from 8.36 to 7.02.

High-A

Aberdeen IronBirds (29-28) 7, Brooklyn Cyclones (30-27) 6

BOX SCORE

  • CF Nick Morabito: 2-for-5, K (.796 OPS)
  • 2B Junior Tilien: 2-for-5, HR (3), R, RBI (16), K (.688 OPS)
  • SS Wilfredo Lara: 2-for-3, 2B (3), 2 R, RBI (17), BB, K, SB (6) (.674 OPS)
  • LF Christopher Suero: 2-for-3, 2 HR (4), 2 R, 4 RBI (18), BB, K (.821 OPS)

Sunday was a disappointing loss for the Cyclones, who entered the ninth inning up 6-3 but wound up losing 7-6 after the IronBirds scored four in the top half of the ninth. The Cyclones recorded nine hits but eight of those came from four batters in the lineup. Christopher Suero had the best night of any Cyclone with his two home runs and four RBIs.

Francisco Alvarez made another rehab start for the Cyclones, catching the entire game. It was a forgettable day at the plate, though, as he went 0-for-5. His bat has been quiet during his rehab, as he’s gone 3-for-19 in six games.

  • RHP Dakota Hawkins: 4 IP, ER, 3 H, BB, K (3.35 ERA)
  • RHP Edwin Díaz: 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, BB, K (0.00 ERA)
  • RHP Joshua Cornielly (H, 2): 2 IP, ER, H, 2 BB, 2 K (4.09 ERA)
  • RHP Jake Stevenson: 1 IP, ER, H, BB, K (7.59 ERA)
  • LHP Julian Smith (BS, 1): 0 IP, 3 ER, H, 2 BB (16.20 ERA)
  • RHP Josh Hejka (L, 0-1): 1 IP, ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 K (1.78 ERA)

In addition to Alvarez, Edwin Díaz also made a rehab assignment for Brooklyn. He threw a scoreless inning with a walk and a strikeout. Before he entered the game, Dakota Hawkins had a good start, allowing an earned run in four innings.

Julian Smith faced just three batters in this outing, allowing all of them to reach base. That brought on Josh Hejka, who was given the loss for not being able to maneuver out of the awful situation he entered the game in.

Low-A

Daytona Tortugas (27-30) 12, St. Lucie Mets (19-38) 3

  • C Ronald Hernandez: 2-for-2 (.749 OPS)
  • RF Yohairo Cuevas: 1-for-4, 2B (9), RBI (12), BB, K (.525 OPS)
  • CF A.J. Ewing: 2-for-4, 2B (1), R, K (.917 OPS)
  • LF Willy Fanas: 2-for-4, 2B (2), R, RBI (5) (.773 OPS)

The St. Lucie Mets lost in a 12-3 blowout on Sunday to the Daytona Tortugas. The Mets scored three runs on nine hits and four walks with two of the best performances coming from A.J. Ewing and Willy Fanas, two newcomers who started the year in the Florida Complex League.

  • RHP Ernesto Mercedes (L, 0-5): 1 2/3 IP, 6 R (3 ER), 2 H, 3 BB, 3 K (5.40 ERA)
  • LHP Ryan Ammons: 2 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 K (3.15 ERA)
  • RHP Juan Arnaud: 2 1/3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 3 H, 4 BB, K (2.89 ERA)
  • RHP Alan Perdomo: 2 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 BB, 2 K (5.79 ERA)

This game was a defensive disasterclass, with St. Lucie pitchers allowing 12 runs on eight hits and 11 walks while the defense made four errors. Ernesto Mercedes has had a rough year, but Ryan Ammons and Juan Arnaud have had solid seasons and still struggled in this one. Alan Perdomo, who has had a bad year, actually did well to finish off the game with 2 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings.
