Today's Wordle answer (game #1136) is… SUPER.
Ah, that's more like it! After three difficult games – for me and for the world at large – this is a much easier Wordle. SUPER has an average score of 3.6 at the time of writing, although it is early days and that may climb a little.
In some sense that should be a surprise, because it's an ER word – and they're traditionally among the most difficult types of answer found in Wordle. However, it starts with the most common opening letter in the game, and that will have brought down the average immediately. It's also a very common word that many people may have played as a narrowing-down option, only to find that they accidentally solved it; that's exactly what happened to me.
The S at the start wasn't relevant in my case – I began with VOCAL, which gave me no letters at all and which left 690 options. But if you played SLATE you were already down to 37, while STARE left a mere 17.
Without the luxury of that green S, or indeed a green anything, I did what I usually do in these circ*mstances and played a word containing the most common letters remaining in the game. TRINE fit the bill nicely, and WordleBot agreed, stating it was exactly what it would have picked in this scenario too.
But though it gave me a couple of yellows, it still left 41 options – and that was because the yellows were E and R.
'Oh dear,' I thought to myself, 'this could be an ER word. Better play one now to confirm that.' So I did. I looked at the remaining letters and decided that SUPER would be the best choice at this stage, because it used the most common letter left in the game, plus the sole remaining vowel. I didn't for a second expect it to be correct, however. After all, the answer could also have been DEFER or EMBER or SEWER or BUYER or RUDER or USHER or HYPER or about three dozen other words (yes, some of these may already have been answers, but my memory is awful so we'll ignore that).
But it wasn't any of those words – it was indeed SUPER, meaning I scored a 3/6 and beat WordleBot's four. Hurrah!

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1135) was… SMOCK.
Oh dear. Another poor game for me saw me score my second five in three days, either side of a horrible six yesterday. This run isn't quite as bad as the time when I scored three fives in a row and then a six, but hey, maybe tomorrow will change that…
Anyway, I'm aware that you almost certainly care more about your own game than about mine, so here's why SMOCK may have been a difficult Wordle to solve: SHOCK. And also, to an extent, STOCK. And maybe also SCOFF and SPOOK and SMOKE and SMOKY. Or are in other words: there were too many answers to pick from.
I didn't play any of those, but I did chase the consonants around the board in much the same way as players of SHOCK and SMOKY will have done, guessing SHOWY and SCOOP as I attempted to narrow down the options.
In my defence, it's another objectively difficult Wordle, with an average score of 4.2. Plus, WordleBot scored a five too. Oh, and I'm supposed to be on vacation, so I will cut myself some slack.

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
