COURIER STAFF ORLANDO Dozens of Red Lobster locations across the country abruptly closed Mon- day, including the Waterloo eatery.

Red website listed more than 80 locations in at least 27 states as The closures came as bank- ruptcy rumors swirled around the seafood chain in recent weeks. Red Lobster has been searching for a buyer to avoid filing for Chapter 11, multiple media outlets re- ported last month. Red top supplier, Thai Union, recently announced it would cut ties with the seafood restaurant as well, CNN reported. The Orlando-based chain has re- portedly been attempting to re- structure its debt and downsize from its 650 U.S. locations, CNN reported.

The company had not publicly acknowledged the closures Mon- day, and did not respond to re- quests for comment. But workers at shuttered restaurants shared their shock on social media. In Waterloo, KWWL-TV reported that two managers at that location confirmed it had closed. And according to Restaurant Business Magazine, equipment from more than 50 Red Lobsters was being auctioned off begin- ning Monday by RestaurantE- quipment.bid, an email from the seller stated. The company called it largest restaurant equip- ment auction Red Lobster announced in 2001 that it would move from Cedar Falls after 23 years to current 180-seat Waterloo location at the northwest corner of San Marnan Drive and Hammond Avenue.

Crews with Waterloo Fire Res- cue were called to Black Hawk Cedar Valley Recycling and Transfer Station, 1920 Water for heavy smoke in the area shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters found fire burn- ing in a large pile debris in a bay at the site. Workers used a skid loader to pull apart the pile and extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported and the fire cause any struc- tural damage to the building, fire officials said. At around 1 a.m., a Fayette County deputy made a traffic stop, and after an investi- gation numerous controlled sub- stances were found and seized. Gregory Napier Davis, 65 of Cedar Rapids, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphet- amine, a class felony; posses- sion with intent to deliver mari- juana, possession of methamphet- amine, third offense, possession of marijuana, third offense, all class felonies; operating while intoxicated, a serious misde- meanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misde- meanor.

According to court records, 24-year-old James Cade told po- lice he delivered a to Oliver Kidd after Kidd allegedly refused to leave the mobile home park where Cade lives. Cade was arrested for willful in- jury causing bodily injury and going armed. Bond was set at $10,000. Witnesses told police the two had been arguing over a marijuana deal at 700 W. Ridgeway Ave.
